MASSIMO GIANNONI

The wisdom of silence

16th April – 31st May 2015

Opening: 16th April 2015, Thursday 5-8 p.m.

Galleria Russo’s new space in İstanbul hosts the first anthology dedicated to the international Italian artist Massimo Giannoni. The exhibition entitled “The wisdom of silence” opens on the 16th of April on Thursday to the public and will last till the 31st of May.The exhibition consists of specially for this occasion created quintessential works, that have made the artist Massimo Giannoni recognizable in the world. Massimo  Giannoni, who works exclusively for the Galleria Russo for almost eight years, is the first among the Italian artists, painting bookstores and historical libraries, which have become the favorite subjects of his art practice for over twenty years. In addition to these, the artist depicts the stock markets, squares and large views of the city, which with their charm attract the attention of the viewer. Books, shelves, decorative elements and architectural interiors we find in Giannoni’s paintings create a breathtaking sight that stops the time between past and present, tradition and modernity. The atmosphere recreated here is the mirror of the real sensation experienced at the entrance into these silent spaces. Within this silence, one can almost feel the wisdom hidden in these shelves full of reassuring information. In contrast, in the compositions dedicated to the world’s stock markets and city views, by means of color and its matter, the artist infuses the chaos, the noise and movement that reigns in these spaces. The thick material color, undisputed star of his paintings, talks and opposes the distance viewing of the work. Near vision transforms the subjects making them unrecognizable, whereas a wider and far point of view allows you to enjoy the unique perspective that opens onto a two-dimensional flat surface of the canvas, with solutions of great visual impact. Massimi Giannoni’s work, demonstrated in the last three consecutive editions of the Contemporary İstanbul fair, is already familiar to the Turkish public. Among his most recent personal public exhibitions, we can count “Duration of the Image” at Giureconsulti Palace in Milan in June 2013, “Four Tripthycs” at the Exhibition Palace of Rome in the winter of 2012 and “Aleph” at the Palazzo della Ragione in Mantua. Giannoni works make part of important Turkish and international collections. In November 2014, the historic seat of Galleria Russo in Rome, made its debut on the international scene as the first Italian gallery to have an exhibition space in İstanbul, considered a symbol of the encounter between East and West. Located in the central district of Beyoglu, in the heart of the lively cosmopolitan city, the Russo Art Gallery wants to be a meeting point of different cultures and an artistic and cultural center in the rich prospective future.

No: 21/A Tophane- İstanbul adresinde 31 Mayıs 2015’e kadar görülebilir.
